EASTER VIGIL (SATURDAY NIGHT)

A Letter from Fr. Blake

Dear Church,

During this pandemic, we must fast from coming together and sharing Holy Communion each week. It’s a particular sacrifice not to meet together as Christ’s church, but especially during Holy Week, the high water mark of the Christian year. And yet in times of such crisis, we remember that God is sovereign, working all things according to his plan, for his glory and our good. So we should expect God to meet us in this time, even when we can’t meet together. Our attention, especially now, should be Godward, expecting great things from him.

Recognizing the irreplaceable nature of Eucharistic worship, we still have an opportunity to practice our faith in our homes, as individuals, families, roommates, and even neighbors in this strange season. In order to make Holy Week as meaningful as possible, we are providing this packet of liturgies as a resource to guide our prayers and worship in this most important week.

Each service is modified from the Book of Common Prayer for home worship. We encourage you to work through each of these services. For those worshipping with small children, we’ve tried to make each service as family-friendly as possible with suggestions and activities along the way. Please include your children and feel free to make adjustments. Each service has an interactive element—branches, candles, Stations of the Cross, rocks, bells, etc.

I recognize that those who live alone may feel particularly alienated at this time. Please reach out to me if you’d like to explore virtual ways of connecting with others during Holy Week.

Also, I invite everyone to join us for Morning and Evening Prayer, Monday through Friday, during Holy Week via Zoom.

Praying for a Blessed Holy Week at Home for our Church!

In Christ,

Blake+

Holy Week Ideas*

  • Light a large candle at the beginning of each service.

  • Draw the Passion story in chalk on your sidewalk.

  • Walk through your neighborhood and pray for your neighbors. Ask your neighbors if there’s anything you can pray for.

  • During the day on Holy Saturday, tell your baptism stories as we get ready to remember and renew our baptisms on Easter Sunday.

  • Wear dark clothes on Good Friday and put on your Sunday best on Easter morning!

  • Build a Resurrection Garden (see Holy Saturday Liturgy).

  • Read through the Vigil stories throughout the week, or dress up and act out one of the Vigil stories. Find the readings here.

  • Fast on Good Friday from food or from something else to spend time in prayer and silence (check out these fasting resources from Father Aaron Damiani).

  • Wake up before sunrise on Easter morning and find somewhere to watch the sunrise, remembering that the light of Christ has dawned upon us (Isaiah 60).

  • Get flowers that you can bring out on Easter morning.

  • Have a special meal on Easter Sunday.

  • Take a family photo to post on social media or text to friends with an Easter note of encouragement.
