Common Questions

Our worship is more traditional in form but we hope warm and welcoming in spirit. We follow the Book of Common Prayer, sing primarily traditional hymns along with some newer music, and often chant the Psalm. The service is reverent and rooted in the Church’s historic practices. We aim to be warmly traditional and joyfully reverent.

In Luke 24, the risen Jesus met two discouraged disciples, explained Scripture to them, and revealed himself to them when he “broke bread” with them. At Holy Cross, we follow that same pattern today. Each Sunday, we hear God’s Word, pray together, sing hymns and psalms, listen to a sermon, and then share in Holy Communion—allowing Christ to meet us and open our eyes, just as he did with those first disciples.

  • The Liturgy of the Word: We hear passages from the Bible (readings from the lectionary, a calendar of readings that guides us through Scripture), sing hymns and psalms, and pray together. The sermon—normally 20–25 minutes—focuses on the Bible, which we believe is the inspired and infallible Word of God, and applies God’s truth to our everyday lives.
  • The Liturgy of the Table: In preparation for Holy Communion, we confess our sins, hear the declaration of absolution based on Christ’s forgiveness, and hear the comfortable words of the Gospel. Our liturgy culminates at the table of Holy Communion where we give thanks for Christ’s death and resurrection and receive the promise of our salvation in bread and wine, the body and blood of Christ.

Most services last about 75–90 minutes, including music, Scripture, sermon, and Communion.

No problem! Everyone is welcome—whether you’re a lifelong Christian or just beginning to explore faith. Many who visit are new to Anglican worship and most of our members have found the Anglican church through other Christian traditions. The entire service is printed in a bulletin to guide you step by step.

All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are invited to receive Communion. You’ll come forward, receive bread, and then drink from the common cup of wine (or dip the bread, if that’s your tradition). If you’re not receiving Communion, you’re welcome to come forward for a prayer of blessing. Baptized children are welcome to receive Holy Communion at the discretion of their parents. Feel free to talk the priest if you’re unsure whether you should receive Holy Communion.

We love having children in worship and value their presence and participation. Their voices and energy are part of our offering to God!

  • Older children remain in the service with their families.
  • Children’s Chapel is offered during the sermon for children 3-5 years old, with a short lesson and activity. They return to the service at the Peace to be with their families for Communion.
  • Nursery care is available for children 3 and under.

You’ll see a mix of attire—some people dress more formally, others come in casual clothes. Wear what feels comfortable and respectful for worship.

Our worship is all about participation! But you are welcome to participate as much or as little as you’d like. The service includes responses, hymns, and moments of kneeling or standing, but everything is guided in the service bulletin. You’re welcome to simply observe. You will not be put on the spot or singled out.

The Book of Common Prayer (2019) gives us a time-tested pattern of Christian worship rooted in the practices of the early church.

We usually share a time of coffee and fellowship, where you can meet others, ask questions, and connect. We also host Fourth Sunday Feasts during the academic year. You are welcome to join us.

Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Our prayer is that you’ll find worship at Holy Cross to be a place of rest, renewal, and hope in God’s presence. If you are exploring Christianity, have questions, or unsure about where you are spiritually, we especially welcome you to come as you are as you explore Christianity.
